Limestone Calcined Clay Cement-Technical Resource Centre for Africa (LC3-TRC Africa) at the Institute of Cement & Concrete, Meru University of Science & Technology, is championing sustainable construction practices across Sub-Saharan Africa through innovative cement technology. A recent milestone is the construction of a demonstration gazebo, built with Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3)- flooring and plastering. This project not only provides a comfortable resting space for staff and visitors but also stands as a testament to LC3’s capabilities towards green building innovations.
LC3 is cost-effective, reducing cement production costs by about 25%, and is made from abundant local materials like limestone and red clay, promoting local industry decentralization and economic growth.
Furthermore, LC3-TRC Africa, under the leadership of Dr. Joseph Mwiti Marangu—Head of LC3 TRC Africa and Director of ICC—recently hosted a study visit for UNIDO and other key stakeholders. The event aimed to foster knowledge exchange and promote the regional adoption of LC3 technology. Representatives from government ministries, industry players, regulatory bodies and research institutions came together, uniting their efforts to advance greener building practices and support climate change mitigation.
This gazebo symbolizes a practical step toward eco-friendly construction and represents how small projects can inspire broader adoption of sustainable building materials in the community.
