A delegation from the Netherlands, Organization for Applied Scientific Research-TNO, recently visited Meru University of Science & Technology(MUST) and paid a courtesy call to the Vice Chancellor Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, to explore potential collaboration on the use of state-of-the-art technologies for affordable housing projects. The team comprised experts including Kas Jansen, a Life Cycle Assessment Specialist; Arch. Marije Ter Steege, Dr. Sayeda Nahar, a Network Specialist for Knowledge Hub; and Eng. Anne Linde Van Overmeir, a Project Manager. Established in 1932, TNO focuses on applied research and innovation across sectors such as energy, health, mobility, and the circular economy to enhance societal and economic development

Upon their arrival, the delegates were warmly welcomed by Dr. Cyprian Muturia, Dean of the School of Pure and Applied Sciences, and Mr. Andrew Nyabuto, Coordinator of the Institute of Cement and Concrete. The main goal of this partnership is to incorporate the advanced technologies provided by Meru University of Science and Technology into Kenya’s Affordable Housing Programme (AHP). By intensifying efforts in the AHP, we can generate employment, support local industries, enhance livelihoods, and promote socio-economic development across the country.

The Kenyan government is dedicated to the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), aiming to deliver atleast 200,000 housing units annually, with a long-term target of over a 1 million units within the next five years. To support this initiative, MUST is actively involved through its Institute of Cement and Concrete, which focuses on scientific research, postgraduate education, and community outreach to promote sustainability in the construction industry.
Through a series of seminars, workshops, and projects such as Limestone calcined clay cement (LC3 ), Circular B-I/O project and Erasmus+ KA171, the University seeks to address critical challenges in the housing sector. This collaboration with TNO represents a significant step toward improving housing accessibility for low and middle-income households in Kenya, while contributing to the country’s broader economic development objectives.
