The Institute of Cement & Concrete (ICC) hosted a Global Workshop on Renewable & Recyclable Construction Materials at Meru University of Science & Technology(MUST) on 16th July 2024.
The workshop focused on three main themes:
1. Designing with Nature: Integrating renewable and recyclable materials into construction projects.
2. Sustainable Construction Practices: Exploring the role of renewable and recyclable building materials, including the role of AI in material discovery and design.
3. Evaluating Environmental Impact: Using life cycle assessment to promote sustainable material selection.
The keynote speakers included Dr. Wolfram Schmidt from Bundesanstalt Für Materialforschung
Und -Prüfung (BAM), Germany, and Eng. Thomas Pfeiffer from SRH Berlin University of Applied
Sciences. They were hosted by Dr. Joseph Mwiti Marangu, Director of the Institute of Cement & Concrete at Meru University of Science & Technology(MUST).
The workshop aimed to train various civic players and stakeholders, including industry players and students. The practical projects discussed included raw materials and framework field studies, pilot structures, pilot processes and AI mobile phone apps that will serve as a central database to store and share all valuable information gathered during the research project.
Students from relevant courses will participate in workshops, lectures, peer-to-peer networking with international universities, and mobility programs for MSc and PhD students. They will also engage in joint MSc and PhD projects and receive practical, hands-on training for the success of the research program. This is one objective to diversify the research’s input and expertise.
The Circular B-I/O project aims to achieve high visibility through a dedicated webpage, social media, online courses, videos, publications and theses. The project aspires to be a central hub for disseminating information on sustainable construction practices.
Various presentations were made by the attendees, addressing issues that contribute to sustainable construction and the goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. These discussions highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation in promoting environmentally friendly construction practices.
The workshop was a significant step towards fostering sustainable construction practices and integrating renewable and recyclable materials into the building industry. The participation of diverse stakeholders underscored the collective effort needed to achieve these goals.
