The LC3-Technical Resource Centre for Africa (LC3-TRC AFRICA), based at the Institute of Cement & Concrete (ICC), Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST), recently hosted a delegation from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), for a Stakeholder Study Visit. This delegation was led by UNIDO’s Industrial Development Expert, Mr. Tomasz Pawelec. The event was graced by the presence of the Vice Chancellor of MUST, Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, alongside Dr. Joseph Mwiti Marangu – Head of LC3 TRC Africa & Director ICC.
This visit primarily highlighted Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) as a low-carbon, scalable and affordable cement blend that reduces carbon dioxide emissions by up to 40%. LC3 unlocks new potential for the construction industry in Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond, by using abundant materials like limestone and clays, which are cost-effective, environmentally friendly and readily available in abundance.
ICC is dedicated to providing high-quality postgraduate education in cement technology, promoting sustainable construction and research initiatives on sustainable cement technologies.
The visit also aimed to explore collaboration opportunities to advance sustainable construction practices and low-carbon cement technologies across the region. LC3-TRC Africa plays a key role in supporting the adoption of LC3 technologies and standards in Sub-Saharan Africa, contributing significantly to greener building solutions and climate change mitigation efforts.
Key policymakers and stakeholders who attended the visit included representatives from:
-
-
- Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI)
- Ministry of Energy
- Ministry of Environment and Climate Change
- Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM)
- Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI)
- National Environment Management Authority (NEMA)
- Local cement producers such as East African Portland Cement Company (EAPCC), Bamburi Cement PLC and National Cement Limited
- Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK)
- Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA)
-
These stakeholders represented the government, industry, research and regulatory sectors essential for advancing sustainable cement technologies and construction practices in Kenya and the wider Sub-Saharan region.
The Institute of Cement & Concrete expresses sincere gratitude to all participants for their dedication and support in making the study visit a success and promoting green innovation in construction.
